Canvas DPI guidance

Canvas has a textured surface and is usually viewed from a little farther away than a photo print, so it does not need 300 DPI. Most canvas printers ask for 150–200 DPI; use 200 DPI as a safe default. Fine-art giclée canvas can still benefit from 300 DPI if the service requests it.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels do I need for a 16 × 20 canvas?

At 200 DPI you need 3200 × 4000 pixels (12.8 megapixels). At 150 DPI you need 2400 × 3000 pixels (7.2 megapixels).

Is 300 DPI always better for canvas?

Not necessarily. The textured canvas surface cannot display all the detail of 300 DPI, and the larger file is harder to upload. 200 DPI is the recommended balance for most canvas prints.

Can I crop my photo to a canvas size without losing quality?

Yes, if the cropped area still contains at least the required pixels. Cropping a 6000 × 4000 photo to 16 × 20 at 200 DPI keeps about 53% of the original pixels, which is usually enough for a sharp canvas.
