Standard frame and mat sizes
| Inside (artwork) size | Common mat widths | Typical outside frame |
|---|---|---|
| 8 × 10 in | 1.5–3 in per side | 11 × 14 in or 16 × 20 in |
| 11 × 14 in | 2–3 in per side | 16 × 20 in or 18 × 24 in |
| 16 × 20 in | 2–4 in per side | 20 × 24 in or 24 × 30 in |
How it works
Mat board outer size = artwork + 2 × mat border on each dimension. Outside frame size = mat outer size + 2 × frame moulding width. For example, an 8 × 10 in print with a 2 in mat and 1 in frame gives a 14 × 16 in mat and a 16 × 18 in frame.
Frequently asked questions
How wide should a mat border be?
A common rule is 1.5–3 inches for prints up to 11 × 14 in. For larger artwork use a wider mat so the frame does not overpower the piece; 2 in is a safe default.
What size frame do I need for an 8 × 10 photo with a 2-inch mat?
The mat outer size is 12 × 14 in. With a 1 in frame moulding, buy or make a frame with an outside size of 14 × 16 in and a 12 × 14 in opening.
