Why paper size matters for digital files
A PDF or image intended for print must contain enough pixels for the printer at the requested DPI. An A4 page at 300 DPI needs 2480 × 3508 pixels; the same page at 150 DPI only needs 1240 × 1754. The paper does not change - the required pixel count does.

What is the difference between A4 and Letter size?
A4 is 210 × 297 mm (8.27 × 11.69 in) and is standard outside North America. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 in (216 × 279 mm), slightly wider and shorter. At 300 DPI, Letter is 2550 × 3300 pixels.
Should I use 150 or 300 DPI for a PDF?
Use 300 DPI for documents that will be read up close. Use 150 DPI only for large posters or when the print service allows it and file size matters.
