Worked examples

• US standard 3.5 × 2 in at 300 DPI: 1050 × 600 px artwork, 1125 × 675 px with 0.125 in bleed on every side.
• ISO CR80 85.6 × 54 mm at 300 DPI: about 1011 × 638 px.
• Common 90 × 54 mm card at 300 DPI: about 1063 × 638 px.
• Oversized 91 × 55 mm card at 300 DPI: about 1075 × 650 px.

Bleed and safe margins for cards

Business cards are trimmed from a larger sheet, so the cut can shift by a fraction of a millimetre. Extend background colours and photos at least 0.125 in (3 mm) beyond the trim edge on all four sides, and keep text, logos and QR codes at least 0.125 in inside the final trim line. Typography and colour tips

• Keep body text at 7 pt or larger; very small text fills in on uncoated stock.
• Use solid black for small text and rich black only for large areas, following the printer's guidance.
• Check thin white text on dark backgrounds - it can disappear if the card is printed slightly light.
• Embed fonts or convert text to outlines before exporting.

Common mistakes

• Exporting at 72 DPI because the screen preview looked fine.
• Placing important text right at the trim edge, then losing it to the cut.
• Using a low-resolution logo that was designed for a website.
• Forgetting that double-sided cards need the same safe margins on both faces.
